Transforming a heritage building

Working with a heritage building presents unique challenges, blending historical preservation with adaptation to contemporary needs. In this project, our mission was to transform an old Canada Post building, dating back to 1909, into a residential complex. This conversion exemplifies an innovative response to the growing demand for housing in Montreal, while also enhancing the built heritage.

To meet building code requirements and ensure optimal natural light for future residents, part of the connecting block—a more recent, non-heritage section—was demolished. This intervention allowed for the creation of an inner courtyard, increasing the facade's exposure to natural light. This concept combines respect for architectural heritage with modern comfort, offering a harmonious balance between the old and the new.
