Hangzhou, Chine

This project was conducted as part of a Carl Steinitz’ design studio at the Harvard Design School.

Located two hours from Shanghai, the city of Hangzhou hired Carl Steinitz and his students, to outline a master plan for the city. To guide development away from the shores of the West Lake, one of the most valued sites for the Chinese, the city officials plan to create a new administrative across the river from the existing city.

Our master plan focuses on creating a network of greenways and revitalize the existing water canals. These green and blue corridors will have a recreational function, and absorb heavy rainfall while preserving the agricultural heritage of this fertile region.
