Cat's Cradle, Jardins de Métis

The title refers to a traditional game in which string is intertwined between the fingers, to form a cradle shape. Instead of cord, in this installation we used piano strings, fastened to the branches of trees in a clearing, to create a garden-sized, musical cradle. Sound is produced when the wind pulls the tree branches to and fro, expanding and contracting the string lattice and making the garden literally sing. Resonating sound cabinets made from recycled piano boards amplify the sound of the garden.
