Master plan for the rehabilitation of Dhaka's canals

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, suffers from ever-increasing floods which impede the country’s economy as city streets, homes and factories are submerged for weeks at a time. Catalyse Urbaine participated in a conference in Dhaka on best management practices of urban waters. As an alternative to traditional engineering solutions against flooding, we propose a network of green spaces to collect torrential rainwater, provide recreational and economic opportunities for the city, and recycle waste-water.

To prove that such a system would indeed work in Dhaka, we visited the East Kolkata Wetlands, which clean Calcutta’s sewage water through a combination of fish farms, paddy-fields and urban agriculture.
